Singing

Second Hand White Baby Grand

I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it on Smash. It’s sung by Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) when Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) was “accidentally” unavailable for the Bombshell rehearsals. If you’re unfamiliar with Smash, you have got to pick up a copy of the hit musical TV series!

The series takes you behind the scenes of pursuing a career in Broadway: what actors have to go through, the process of putting a musical together, getting investors to be able to stage the show… It was very eye-opening for me and it was also nice to see cameos of some of my favourite Broadway performers.

During the first season, the characters were trying to mount a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. I love how the songs were so beautifully apt for each stage in her life–from her beginnings as Norma Jeane Baker to the bombshell Marilyn Monroe. This song was for a scene where she was waxing sentimental over the white baby grand piano that she owned and how it brought back memories of her mother. Enjoy!
