I was invited to host a wellness retreat for breast cancer patients at the Taal Vista Lodge, Tagaytay last November 20. It was enlightening to hear the patients relay their journey as it broadened my understanding of breast cancer and how they endure it physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The retreat began with a talk from a medical oncologist who discussed the nature of  HER2-positive breast cancer and  health solutions available. Instructors from the Peace Blossoms Internal Arts Society then talked about the benefits of Tai Chi followed by an actual session. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art which involves fluid yet precise movements which enhances one’s focus and energy.

After the tai chi session, Cathy Babao-Guballa of the Philippine Daily Inquirer talked about how journal-writing can be therapeutic for one who is going through a tough time in his/her life. Writing one’s feelings down she says, can help cleanse the soul and offer wisdom to others who may tread on the same path later on.

The participants made use of their hands in the afternoon activities like flower arrangement and proper massage techniques which were taught by lecturers from TESDA, and accessory-making facilitated by Ms. Gladys Mallillin of Lifestyle Network.
