Once upon a time in my younger life, I was invited to attend a go-see for @jrp_philippines students. A magazine visited the school, looking to feature some students on an advertorial. I went in, encouraged by the teachers & staff to try out. While JRP believed in me, it was the magazine editor’s comment that threw me off. In #JRP, we are taught about body types and wardrobe. You are not forced to be like those skinny models on billboards and magazine spreads. You learn to work with what you are born with—your body composition, bone structure, height and even skin tone. I had a narrower top then, and bigger hips. As soon as I mentioned my size and type, the lady looked at me condescendingly and said “Oh, that’s not proportionate.” completely closing me off. I had a moment of conflict then—my school was so supportive and taught us to embrace our body types YET that magazine completely contradicted what we have been taught. It’s like “You don’t fit our model mold. Sorry.” And to think the magazine catered to TEENAGERS. How then were they molding their audience? Were they subtly shaping them to think—this is the ideal mold you girls have to fit in to, in order to be accepted? On hindsight, I thank God that I wasn’t part of that project. My body composition may be a bit different, now that I have filled up in other places but I am an advocate of embracing the body structure you're born with and not conforming to the unrealistic standards of skinnyness/sexyness. #bodylove #bodytypes #wardrobe
